Residents meet with engineers about Squaw Creek Road reconstruction project
The city of Willow Park hosted a town hall on May 29 for residents to get an update on the engineering progress of the Squaw Creek Road reconstruction project.
The town hall consisted of a presentation done by Jacob Martin LLC engineer Derek Turner, followed by a public Q&A where attendees could ask general questions and then finished with residents speaking with the engineers one-on-one above a map layout of Squaw Creek Road where they could ask specific questions about what will be done near their properties.
During the presentation Turner stressed how much the plan was going to try to remain in the same driving service that is already present but said that design and safety factors may cause that to be exceeded.
“Things are fluid, and they’re certainly not set in stone at this point,” Turner said. “This is a beginning point that we want to look at.”
Some of the main points addressed were the need for the roads to be completely reconstructed due to the poor foundation after many years of use, whether it will be concrete or asphalt for the construction depending on the quoted prices, safety considerations including safe stopping distance, and an initial timeline of how long the project will take.
According to the timeline, the design is projected to be completed in September of this year, with construction starting in March of next year and the whole project completing in February of 2027.
According to the Willow Park city website, the project has crossed the 30% engineering complete milestone and is now in its meetings with the public phase.
During the public Q&A after the engineering presentation, residents brought up concerns such as if asphalt or concrete would be the best for the roads and if this project can be used in tandem with bringing faster internet into the area. Turner said that both the city and Jacob Martin would reach out to about the work being done.
Another question asked was if this work would disrupt other utilities in the process, and Turner said that while they will be going through a thorough vetting process to find the contractors, accidents can still happen.
“We will show everything that we possibly can find on the plan so [utilities] know [the contractors] are there, and then we’ll coordinate with the utilities themselves,” he said.
Some major concerns brought up by Mayor Teresa Palmer at the meeting were if the driveway turning radius would be affected and how deep the ditches would be, after her experience with the construction project of Ranch House Road and Crown Road.
“My dog fell in the ditch,” Palmer said. “I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh. There goes my dog.’”
Turner said that for the most part he didn’t foresee any issues with going into peoples’ driveway spaces or deepening ditches at this point in the engineering design.
The project includes not only street reconstruction but also putting in a new waterline and addressing water drainage issues in the area through things like ditches and culverts.
According to the plan shown at the meeting, the new water piping will be placed on the opposite side from where it was previously, which Squaw Creek proper residents Bruce and Barbara Williams were the most concerned about, since it would regularly leak from the culvert in front of their house over the 40 years they’ve lived at the house.
“That was one thing we wanted to find out, is the plan to put the new water line on the opposite side,” he said.
The residents were able to bring up specific issues they’ve noticed on their properties and talk to the engineers at the map, who marked down their concerns on the map. Some even had photos to share, like Steve Ireson, who had photos of flooding that’s occurred that reached all the way to Squaw Creek Golf Course.
“It’s a lot of water,” Ireson’s wife Judy said.
Palmer emphasized that the citizens of Willow Park are encouraged to ask City Hall any questions or concerns they have. One of the next steps that was mentioned at the meeting was inviting residents to have one-on-ones with the engineers to have in-depth conversations about how the project will affect their property as a way to continue the dialogue that was started that night.
“It seemed like they were really taking into consideration all of our concerns, and we appreciated being able to voice those to them in person,” Kristy Mankin said.
There will be an additional meeting held for the residents of the sideroads of Squaw Creek to come and speak to the engineers as well and voice their concerns.
